Make tomorrow better.

Welcome

Despite our best intentions to change things in our life, we sometimes still struggle to make progress. It is as if our problems sometimes trap us and we can’t move forward.

Other times we may simply feel slightly dissatisfied with our life, but we can’t clearly put our finger on the issue.

In times like these it might be useful to consult a psychologist.

My name is Marié Pelser, and I am a registered Counselling Psychologist who consults about these and other problems.

Making the decision to consult a psychologist might seem overwhelming. That is why I have included some information and questions that you might have. Hopefully this will make the process of deciding which psychologist to use, somewhat easier.

My Approach

As a professional practitioner I provide a non-threatening environment where personal and relationship issues can be explored. My main approach is cognitive-behavioural. In essence this means that we’ll explore the way you perceive and think about issues and how your behaviour is influenced by these thoughts. The same principle applies to how thoughts and emotions are influenced by behaviour.

By working together we’ll explore, develop and re-discover your own ability to make changes and resolve issues. Oftentimes it is only the lack of the necessary skills that prevents someone from moving forward or dealing with an issue.

The ultimate goal of psychotherapy is to assist the client in living the abundant, satisfying life that they are meant to live. I would like every person to enjoy life’s journey by making wise, purposeful decisions.

In essence I assist the client in becoming emotionally more intelligent. As a result the client’s need for future psychotherapy is reduced, as they now have obtained skills to effectively deal with life’s challenges. This is an important factor to take into consideration in this day and age where everything boils down to time- and cost-effectiveness!

Initially it is useful to follow-up on your progress on a weekly basis. This gives you the opportunity to give me feedback on how you experience the changes you are making and also to learn the skills to effectively deal with the challenges you are facing. Later on the period in between sessions can be stretched out to once in two weeks or even once a month. All of this depends on the goals that was set by you in consultation with me. Please feel free to discuss this with me at the initial session.

This is highly dependent on the goals that you have set for yourself during the first session. It also depends on how effectively you apply the skills that you learn during psychotherapy to the challenges that you are facing.

I regard myself as a shorter-term therapist. This means that clients usually accomplish the goals that they have set for psychotherapy within about six sessions. The approximate duration of psychotherapy will be discussed with you at the initial consultation.
